Heat stored in a salt block

Inside the unit is a special inorganic salt material — not water. When you put heat into it, the salt softens (melts at around 70°C). When you take heat out, the salt sets again. The temperature stays steady the whole time, like an ice pack in reverse.

Four times smaller than a cylinder

Salt holds about four times more heat per litre than water does. A FlexTherm Eco 6E gives roughly the same usable hot water as a 140-litre cylinder — in less than a quarter of the space. For tight London airing cupboards, this matters.

Vacuum panel keeps the heat inside

A vacuum-insulation panel wraps the salt core, cutting standing heat losses to about 27 W on the 6E size. That's a fraction of what an old insulated cylinder loses (roughly 50–100 W). Less wasted heat, lower standing-loss bills.

Charges fast, charges from anything

A full charge from cold takes about 2.5 hours on the 6E. Charging energy can come from grid electricity, surplus rooftop PV, a heat pump, or an existing boiler. The right variant (G2 E or G2 D) makes that choice work seamlessly.

Two variants for two system types

G2 E (electric direct) replaces a direct hot-water cylinder — uses electricity only. G2 D (indirect) replaces an indirect cylinder — can be charged by a heat pump, a boiler, district heating, or grid electricity, with PV on top. Pick the right one at order.

Cold-water-safe, no maintenance

The mains water flows through a heat exchanger inside the unit — never sits stagnant. Less than a few litres at any time, so no legionella risk. The salt block is sealed for life, no top-ups, no anode, no annual flush. Fit and forget.

Easy controls

Smart controller schedules charging on the cheapest energy source available — PV when sunny, off-peak overnight, heat pump when running.

FlexTherm app · iOS / Android

Monitor charge level (like a phone battery for hot water), see today’s charging sources, override schedules manually. Set up once at install — minimal interaction needed after.

Off-peak tariff scheduling

Schedules charging during the cheapest electricity windows — Octopus Go, Cosy, Agile, or any time-of-use tariff. The vacuum insulation holds heat for days, so timing the charge precisely matters less than with a cylinder.

Solar PV priority

If you have solar, the controller takes surplus generation first. Pairs especially well with battery storage — PV during the day, battery in the evening, off-peak grid as backup.

Heat-pump integration

In systems with both a heat pump and PV, the FlexTherm switches charging source automatically based on what’s cheaper at that moment — heat pump efficiency vs spot PV output.

Smart-grid module (optional)

Optional smart-grid module enables demand-response tariffs — charging when grid carbon intensity is low or when the supplier offers negative pricing during surplus generation periods.

CleverBloom can help

Choosing the right charging source priorities and setting up smart-grid features is a quick conversation at install — or any time after.

Installation

FlexTherm Eco G2 fits into much smaller spaces than a cylinder. A water connection and a 230 V mains feed are all that's required. Any qualified plumber and electrician can fit it — no specialist certification needed.

01 Survey 1-2 hours on site Confirm hot-water demand — how many people, how many showers, what kind of household. Pick the right size (6E for typical, 12E for larger). Identify the install location and confirm 230 V mains is in reach. Check whether to use the G2 E or G2 D variant.
02 Specify 2-3 days desk work Choose unit size, variant (E for direct-electric, D for heat-pump or boiler-fed), and whether to integrate with rooftop PV. Detail pipework routing — cold mains in, hot out, plus the heating circuit if using G2 D. Order placed with Flamco UK.
03 Install Half day to a day Existing cylinder removed if applicable. FlexTherm Eco delivered as a sealed unit. Positioned, connected to cold mains, hot out, and the heat-source pipework if G2 D. Electrical connection completed. Significantly faster install than a new cylinder — the vacuum-insulated unit comes ready to charge.
04 Charge & commission Couple of hours First charge takes about 2.5 hours on the 6E from cold. The salt block softens and reaches operating temperature. Once charged, the controller takes over: charge schedule set, PV integration tested if used, hot-water output checked at the tap. App pairing for monitoring.

Components

What’s inside the Flamco FlexTherm — the parts that store heat in a sealed box up to 4× smaller than a cylinder, with almost no standing loss.

1 · Phase-change-material core

A sealed block of phase-change material at the heart of the unit. Stores 4× more heat per litre than water. Melts when charging, sets when discharging, temperature stays steady throughout the cycle.

2 · Vacuum insulation panels

The key differentiator. Vacuum-insulated panels surround the core — like a giant thermos flask. Standing loss is just 27 W on the 6E variant (smaller than a single LED bulb). Heat held for days without significant loss.

3 · Mains-pressure DHW exchanger

A stainless steel coil runs through the PCM core. Cold mains water flows through the coil on demand — comes out hot at the tap. No stored hot water, no legionella risk.

4 · Multi-source charging input

The FlexTherm can charge from any heat source — surplus solar PV, off-peak electric, heat pump output, or boiler return. The input is configured per install to match what you have or what you’re planning.

5 · Smart controller

Schedules charging on cheap-rate tariffs, prioritises solar PV, runs system diagnostics. Wi-Fi enabled, connects to phone app for monitoring. Optional smart-grid module for demand-response tariffs.

6 · Charge sensors

Temperature sensors in the PCM core tell the controller how much energy is stored and when it’s time to recharge. Real-time charge level visible in the app — like a phone battery for hot water.

7 · Sealed for life

The unit is sealed at the factory. No moving parts inside, no fluids to top up, no anode to replace. The PCM is rated for thousands of charge cycles — effectively the working life of the building.

8 · CleverBloom can help

Sizing the right FlexTherm variant (6E for compact, 10E for larger demand) and choosing the right charging source(s) is a design conversation we have during the site visit.

Aftercare

FlexTherm Eco G2 is a sealed thermal battery with no moving parts. The salt material doesn't degrade with use. Annual visual check during the heating-system service is enough.

Manufacturer warranty

Flamco's standard warranty applies per their published policy at the time of order. The salt material can be charged and discharged indefinitely without loss of efficiency, so real-world product life is long.

No legionella, no descaling

Cold mains water passes through a heat exchanger and out to the tap with very little residence time, so legionella has no chance to grow. There's no large tank of standing hot water to descale or treat. The salt core needs no service.

Sealed unit

The salt is sealed inside the unit. No top-up, no inhibitor, no anode replacement. The water-side heat exchanger gets a magnetic filter on the heating circuit (good practice for any system).

Hidden, no homeowner action

Once installed, the unit lives in its cupboard. Apart from glancing at the controller occasionally, the homeowner never interacts with it. Charging schedules can be set once and left alone for years.

100% recyclable end-of-life

No toxic substances inside. The salt material, the steel casing, and the heat exchangers are all recyclable. Compared to a typical cylinder full of inhibitor-treated water, end-of-life disposal is cleaner.

European manufacturer support

Flamco is part of Aalberts NV, a major European HVAC industrial group based in the Netherlands. UK technical support and spares come via Flamco's European service network. CleverBloom handles UK design and project coordination.
