SOAKS UP SURPLUS ELECTRICITY
A heat pump on top of a 450-litre tank. The heat pump pulls heat out of the room’s air and puts it into the water. Because it’s moving heat instead of making it from electricity, it uses about a quarter of the power of an immersion heater for the same hot bath.
A full tank delivers about 589 litres of hot water at 40°C in one heating cycle — enough for a string of showers in a busy household or guesthouse. Through the day, the heat pump tops the tank back up automatically. Daily output well over 1,000 litres.
If one SMAX isn’t enough, two or three or more can be linked into one system. They take turns heating share the load, and never run dry. Useful for sports centres, B&Bs, hair salons, care homes — anywhere hot-water demand peaks above what a single tank can cover.
A booster button raises target temperature and runs an electric backup alongside the heat pump — useful after a busy morning of showers. The unit recovers a full tank quickly without waiting for the heat-pump cycle alone.
When the heat pump pulls heat out of the air, that air cools down. Useful in a cellar, plant room, or back-of-house store where you actually want it cool. The cooled air can be ducted to where it’s wanted, or left to circulate locally.
A built-in PV outlet diverts surplus rooftop solar to charge the tank during the day. Smart-grid functions let the unit time itself around the cheapest electricity rates. Combined, the running cost can be a fraction of the listed energy figure.
Commercial-grade Wi-Fi controller with Modbus BMS integration. Schedules across multiple cascaded units, prioritises PV, and manages peak demand windows.
Kronoterm Cloud app · iOS / Android
Full system control from your phone. View live status across single or cascaded units, energy consumption per day/week/month, alerts and warnings. Multi-building support for facilities managers.
Modbus BMS integration
Standard Modbus RS-485 connection lets the SMAX integrate with any commercial BMS — Trend, Siemens, Tridium, Schneider. Real-time data exchange with the building’s wider plant.
Cascade scheduling
When 2 or 3 SMAX units are cascaded, the master controller staggers their operation — one base-load unit runs continuously, others kick in during peak demand windows (gym morning rush, hotel checkout, kitchen pre-service).
Solar PV priority
When the building has PV generation, the SMAX takes the surplus for hot water before grid export. Variable-speed compressor matches PV output. Big savings on facilities with sizeable rooftop arrays.
Anti-legionella cycle
Commercial-grade legionella management with logging for compliance. The booster element supports the heat pump for these cycles — meets HSE L8 / ACoP requirements with full audit trail.
CleverBloom can help
Cascade setup, BMS integration, and commercial commissioning is part of every CleverBloom SMAX install — we coordinate with your BMS contractor and provide an O&M manual at handover.
SMAX is a larger unit than a domestic cylinder — about a day for a qualified plumber and electrician. Best installed at first-fix in a new utility/plant room, or in retrofits where the existing cylinder room can take the larger footprint.
What’s inside the Kronoterm SMAX — a commercial-grade hot-water heat pump with a 450 L tank, designed for hotels, gyms, spas, and multi-unit residential.
1 · Heat pump module (top)
Larger compressor than the Essenta, sized for commercial duty cycles. Pulls heat from the surrounding air or ducted air supply. Variable-speed inverter modulates from low to full output without on/off cycling.
2 · 450 L stainless steel tank
Larger capacity than residential models. Stainless steel inner tank with high-spec foam insulation. 589 L of usable hot water per heating cycle at 40°C delivery temperature — sized for peak demand in commercial buildings.
3 · Heat exchanger coil
A long coiled heat exchanger runs through the water tank. Refrigerant in the coil gives up its heat to the water. The water never mixes with the refrigerant.
4 · Booster element
A larger electric element than residential models provides rapid recovery during peak demand windows (gym morning rush, hotel checkout time, restaurant pre-service) and weekly anti-legionella cycles (65°C).
5 · Cascade capability
Two or three SMAX units can be cascaded together for very high demand. The smart controller staggers their operation — one runs as a base load, others kick in during peak. Up to ~1,800 L tank capacity in cascade.
6 · Smart controller + cloud
Wi-Fi enabled controller schedules charging on cheap-rate tariffs, prioritises solar PV, runs anti-legionella cycles, and provides commercial-grade BMS integration via Modbus.
7 · Ducting flange
Built-in 200 mm air duct flanges let the SMAX pull air from one room (kitchen, plant room) and exhaust it to another. Avoids cooling the room it sits in — important for commercial plant rooms with other equipment.
8 · CleverBloom can help
Sizing the right SMAX (or cascade of multiple units), planning the air ducting, integrating with PV, and connecting to a commercial BMS is a design conversation we have during the site visit.
A commercial-grade DHW heat pump runs more cycles per day than a residential one — an annual service is recommended to keep efficiency and reliability high.
Manufacturer warranty
Kronoterm warrants the heat pump and tank per their published policy — available at quotation. SMAX is a commercial-leaning product; expect longer warranty terms when registered with Kronoterm at install.
Annual service recommended
Air-filter clean, condensate-drain check, electrical contact check, app firmware update. About 1–2 hours per unit per year. Important for commercial sites where hot-water failure means lost trade.
Anti-legionella runs automatically
The unit raises tank temperature to 65°C on a programmable schedule (typically weekly) to kill any bacteria that might develop in stored water. Important for any property serving the public.
Cloud monitoring
CLOUD.KRONOTERM gives remote access to tank temperature, energy use, error codes, and cycle history. Particularly useful for B&Bs and salons where the owner isn't always on site.
No refrigerant top-ups
Sealed at the factory. No refrigerant maintenance under normal use. If a fault occurs in the refrigerant circuit, only a refrigeration-qualified engineer can open it — CleverBloom maintains a register of qualified service partners.
European manufacturer support
Kronoterm is a Slovenian company with 50 years of heat-pump experience. SMAX is independently verified by TÜV Rheinland in Germany. Spares and warranty work come via Kronoterm's European service network. CleverBloom handles UK design and project coordination.
Heat pump unit only. Radiators, UFH, and emitters are on the heating page.
