External shading

External shading rejects solar heat before it even reaches the glass — by far the most effective form of passive cooling. Internal blinds, curtains, and even window film all act after the heat has already entered the glazing envelope. The RT-BOX shutter mounts above the window externally and rolls down on demand, intercepting solar radiation at the building boundary. Approximately 90% of solar heat is rejected when fully closed.

PHI-certified thermal package

The shutter box itself is engineered to Passivhaus Institut (PHI) thermal performance. An expanded polystyrene (EPS) core wrapped in a polyethylene (PE) liner inside a PVC outer shell delivers a continuous insulated barrier across the lintel area — eliminating the cold-bridge that conventional shutter boxes introduce. PHI certifies this specific assembly as suitable for Passivhaus and EnerPHit projects without further thermal modelling required.

Acoustic membrane

A 3.5 mm acoustic damping membrane is laminated into the shutter assembly. When the shutter is fully closed, the membrane absorbs incident sound — particularly effective against traffic and urban noise in the low-to-mid frequency range. Independent testing shows traffic noise reduction of up to 48 dB at the glazing plane, transforming bedrooms on busy streets without changing the window itself.

Weather-sensing automation

An optional weather-sensor package adds wind, temperature, and solar sensors to the install. The shutter raises automatically when wind exceeds a safe threshold (preventing slat damage), lowers on hot afternoons when solar gain peaks, and adjusts schedules dynamically based on real local conditions. No homeowner intervention needed — the system runs itself.

Night-time thermal bonus

A closed shutter at night adds a layer of trapped air outside the glazing — effectively turning a triple-glazed window into a quad-glazed assembly during the heating season. Typical U-value improvement is around 15–25% on the closed-shutter window plane. Particularly valuable on east, west, and north elevations where the solar-gain story doesn't apply but the heat-loss story does.

Pairs with active cooling

RT-BOX is a passive load-reduction measure. It dramatically reduces cooling demand on south-facing elevations but doesn't eliminate cooling load entirely — on a high-humidity heatwave week, active cooling is still needed. The combination — external shading first, internal air-side cooling second — delivers the most efficient overall system. Smaller heat pump, smaller fan coils, lower running cost, less acoustic intrusion from active equipment.

Box U-Value 0.18 W/m²K The PHI-certified box assembly — EPS core, PE liner, PVC shell. Continuous insulation across the lintel, eliminating the thermal bridge conventional shutter boxes introduce above the window.
Solar Rejection 90% When fully closed. The single most effective form of passive cooling — solar heat is rejected before it touches the glass, not after. Massively reduces cooling demand on the relevant elevations.
Night U-Value Bonus -20% Closed shutter on the window plane improves overall window U-value by trapping a layer of air outside the glazing. Particularly valuable on north, east, and west elevations during heating season.
PHI Certified ✓ Passivhaus Institut certified component. Can be used in Passivhaus and EnerPHit projects without further thermal modelling. The only motorised UK-market roller shutter with PHI certification.
Frost Protection ✓ Closed shutters in winter protect the glazing from extreme cold and reduce condensation risk on the inner glass face. Particularly valuable in airtight Passivhaus and EnerPHit construction.
EPC Contribution ✓ Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) modelling generally credits external shutters as contributing to overheating mitigation and reduced cooling demand. SAP assessor confirms case-by-case.

Control

Wi-Fi app

iOS and Android app provides full per-shutter control. Open, close, or position to any intermediate point. Bedroom shutters can run on different schedules to living-room shutters. Holiday mode randomises operation to simulate occupancy. Standalone account supports multiple properties.

Time scheduling

Per-shutter time programmes. Bedroom shutters lower at 22:00 for privacy and noise reduction, raise at 07:00 for daylight. Living-room shutters lower on south elevations at 13:00 in summer when solar gain peaks. Schedules pause automatically on detected unusual occupancy.

Sun-tracking mode

With the optional solar sensor, shutters lower automatically when measured incident solar radiation exceeds a setpoint — typically late morning on south elevations, late afternoon on west elevations. Raises again when the sun moves past or sets. Per-elevation logic, no global override.

Wind-protection mode

A mast-mounted wind sensor (one per property) reads local wind speed and direction. When wind exceeds the safe operating threshold for the shutter geometry, the system raises all shutters automatically — protecting the slats from wind-loading damage. Resumes scheduled operation when wind drops.

Temperature-triggered cooling

When integrated with a CleverBloom cooling system, the shutters can lower automatically when room temperature exceeds a comfort threshold — reducing solar gain before active cooling needs to kick in. Cuts overall electricity consumption on hot summer afternoons.

Holiday mode

Randomised operation across the property — different shutters open and close at varying times across the day to simulate occupancy. Useful as a passive security measure during extended absences. Configurable for the duration of any planned trip.

Manual override switch

A wall switch by each window provides direct manual control independent of the app. Useful for guests, for non-smart-home occupants, or for any moment when the homeowner wants direct control without unlocking their phone.

KNX, Loxone, Crestron

Integration with whole-house building automation systems via standard protocols. The shutter system reports state and accepts commands from any orchestrator the building runs. Best deployed when the property already has a building controller specified for lighting and HVAC.

Voice control

Alexa and Google Assistant integration through the Luxe Perfil app. "Close the bedroom shutters," "Open the kitchen shutters" — natural-language commands route through the app's cloud connector to the local controller. Useful as a convenience layer, not a primary control method.

Installation

01 Phone chat 15–30 minutes · free Talk us through your property, the windows you want shuttering, and your priorities — solar gain reduction, acoustic, security, all three. Send photos of the external elevations. We measure approximate window sizes from the photos, confirm RT-BOX Passive is the right pick versus the manual standard shutter, and quote per unit. Full quote within 48 hours. Site survey for confirmation if the project is over 4 units.
02 Fit day 1–2 days on site (typical home) Installer arrives, runs the on-site checks first thing — window reveal dimensions, lintel substrate, electrical socket route from the consumer unit to each shutter motor, Wi-Fi signal in the relevant rooms for the gateway placement. Existing window furniture protected. Shutter box brackets fixed above each window, boxes lifted into position, side guides fitted, slats unrolled, motors wired, gateway commissioned, weather sensor mounted to the mast. App paired to homeowner's phone.
03 How to use 30 minutes · same day We walk you through the app, set the default schedules (bedrooms vs living rooms, summer vs winter), demo the manual override switches, configure the holiday mode preset, and show you what the weather-sensor triggers do. Hand over the one-page user card and the 10-year warranty documentation. Done.

Components

1 · RT-BOX Passive housing

PVC outer shell housing an EPS thermal core and a PE liner. Mounted above the window externally, integrated with the reveal lintel during install. The PHI-certified assembly. Available in standard sizes 165, 205, 240 mm depth — sized to suit the window head detail and the slat coil diameter required for the drop height.

2 · Aluminium slat curtain

Foamed aluminium slats with insulated cores, joined by stainless-steel links. The slat profile balances structural strength against light weight, allowing larger window spans without sagging. Powder-coated in any RAL colour or in natural anodised finish. Lifespan typically 30+ years.

3 · 3.5 mm acoustic membrane

Laminated into the slat assembly. Provides up to 48 dB noise reduction at the glazing plane when the shutter is closed. Particularly effective against urban traffic and aircraft noise in the low-to-mid frequency range. Independent acoustic test certificates available.

4 · Motor & mechanism

230 V mains-powered electric motor concealed inside the shutter box. Soft-start and soft-stop control for silent operation (typically <38 dB during travel). Built-in obstacle detection — if anything blocks the shutter during descent, the motor stops automatically. Replaceable as a service item.

5 · Wi-Fi controller + sensors

A Wi-Fi gateway connects up to 16 shutters in one property to the app. Optional weather-sensor package (wind, temperature, sun) adds environmental triggers. Battery backup ensures the controller survives short power cuts without losing schedules. App available for iOS and Android.

6 · Side guides & bottom rail

Aluminium side guides house the slat ends and provide acoustic and thermal sealing along the window jamb. Bottom rail features an integrated brush seal against the cill — completes the thermal and acoustic envelope when fully closed. Powder-coated to match the slats.

Aftercare

10-year warranty

Luxe Perfil warrants the motor, mechanism, and shutter assembly for ten years from commissioning. Covers motor failure, mechanism wear, slat breakage, and PHI thermal performance. Conditional on routine operation within the published wind and weather thresholds. Both parts and labour covered.

30+ year design life

Foamed aluminium slat construction with stainless-steel linkages has a real-world life of three to four decades. Spanish-made to the EU outdoor-fitting durability standard. Motors are the most likely service item — typically replaceable in under an hour without disturbing the slat curtain or the box housing.

Annual cleaning

Wipe the slat curtain with a soft cloth and mild detergent solution once a year — typically as part of spring window cleaning. The side guides benefit from a vacuum to clear leaves and grit that can accumulate over winter. No specialist products needed.

App updates

The Wi-Fi gateway receives over-the-air firmware updates automatically. App features, security patches, and new sensor integrations roll out without homeowner action. The shutters themselves are mechanical — no firmware in the motor — so software changes never affect physical operation.

Wind sensor calibration

The mast-mounted wind sensor is the single most important safety device — it protects the shutter slats from over-pressure damage in high winds. CleverBloom recommends an annual calibration check during the autumn service visit. A misreading wind sensor can either fail to retract in genuine wind or retract unnecessarily in calm conditions.

Side-guide drainage

A small annual check that the side guides drain freely — autumn leaves and grit can block the drainage holes, causing water to pond in the guide channel and accelerate corrosion of the aluminium track. A few minutes with a wire and a vacuum each autumn extends life by years.
