Compact P uses both passive and active heat recovery in series. First, a high-efficiency counterflow heat exchanger captures up to 95% of heat from extract air and transfers it to incoming fresh air without mixing the two streams. Then the integrated heat pump recovers the residual 5–10% energy that the passive exchanger cannot — combining for effectively complete heat recovery from extract air. This is what Nilan call "active heat recovery", and it's the architectural difference vs simpler MVHR units.
When the supply air temperature setpoint is met, the heat pump diverts its output to the 180-litre integrated hot water tank instead. Extract air is the heat source — typical exhaust air at 20–22°C provides reliable heat pump performance year-round, much more stable than ambient outdoor air. COP for hot water is approximately 3:1 — three units of heat per unit of electrical input. Continuous ventilation operation means continuous low-cost hot water production.
In summer, the heat pump runs in reverse — supply air is cooled by up to 10°C below outdoor air temperature, while waste heat from the cooling cycle goes to top up the hot water tank. Free hot water during cooling season. Note: this is supplementary cooling for low-energy buildings, not air conditioning. The low ventilation rate (275 m³/h max) is sized for fresh air, not for active room cooling like a split AC unit.
When outdoor air is cooler than indoor (typical UK summer nights), the bypass damper routes incoming fresh air around the heat exchanger rather than through it. Cool night air enters the home directly without being warmed by extract air. Free cooling, no heat pump electricity needed. Combined with the active reversible cooling for hot days, gives the homeowner two cooling strategies — passive bypass when outdoor is favourable, active heat pump when not.
For cold-climate installations (highland Scotland, Cumbria, exposed sites), Compact P Polar adds an integrated electric pre-heater on the outdoor air intake. This prevents ice formation in the heat exchanger during severe frost, maintaining full heat recovery throughout winter rather than dropping into defrost cycles. Standard Compact P uses an automatic defrost cycle when frost is detected — cheaper, but with brief efficiency dips during defrost. Specified at order based on site exposure.
For projects beyond standard Compact P scope: AIR9 adds an integrated air-to-water heat pump (~9 kW) for waterborne UFH or radiator heating — scales the system into 200+ m² family Passivhaus territory. GEO 3 / 6 / 9 variants add ground-source heat pumps for waterborne heating. XL variant scales airflow to 430 m³/h for larger or multi-unit dwellings. All share the same control architecture, hot water tank, and ventilation core.
Compact P ships with the CTS602 control system as standard — HMI Touch panel, integrated humidity sensor, automatic legionella protection, weekly schedule programming, and intelligent humidity control. Modbus TCP/IP and RS485 RTU as standard for BMS integration. Nilan app for iOS and Android. Optional CO₂ sensor, external HMI panel, and remote service portal.
CTS602 HMI Touch panel
Standard Nilan control system with HMI Touch panel — graphical interface for ventilation steps, temperature setpoints, hot water schedule, and humidity control. Wall-mountable in living space or utility room. Multi-language support including English. Visual filter change reminder, alarm log, and energy consumption monitoring.
Nilan app · iOS / Android
Free Nilan mobile app for remote monitoring and control. Adjust ventilation step, change hot water setpoint, view alarm status, and monitor system performance — at home or away. Filter change reminders pushed to the app automatically when due. Single account supports multiple buildings — useful for landlords or property managers.
Nilan service portal
Optional remote service portal for ongoing monitoring by property managers, landlords, or maintenance teams. Diagnose issues remotely without site visit. Particularly useful for multi-unit residential developments — A2Dominion-style schemes where one operator manages dozens of Compact P installs across a development.
Modbus TCP/IP + RS485
Open Modbus communication standard — both TCP/IP (Ethernet) and RS485 RTU (serial) supported. Bidirectional — BMS can monitor every parameter and write settings, not just read status. Direct integration with Loxone, KNX (via gateway), Crestron, Niagara, or any Modbus-compatible BMS. Default protocol set to Modbus TCP/IP.
Intelligent humidity control
Built-in humidity sensor on the extract air circuit. CTS602 controller automatically increases ventilation when humidity rises (showers, cooking) and reduces ventilation in winter when indoor air is too dry. Adjustable threshold per room or whole-house. Reduces condensation risk and improves comfort without manual intervention. Standard on every Compact P.
CO₂ sensor (optional)
Optional Korea Digital SenseCube CO₂ sensor for demand-controlled ventilation. Increases airflow when occupancy raises CO₂ levels, drops to baseline when room is empty. NDIR dual-wavelength sensor, RS485 / 4–20mA / 0–10V outputs. Most useful for variable-occupancy spaces — guest rooms, home offices, multi-unit residential.
Automatic legionella protection
CTS602 automatically boosts hot water tank temperature above 60°C once weekly via the integrated electric immersion heater — kills any legionella build-up in the tank. Standard on every Compact P. Built-in scalding protection prevents output above safe temperature at the tap. Electronically monitored sacrificial anode with alarm when replacement is due.
User select + cooker hood interlock
Programmable user selection inputs accept potential-free signals from cooker hoods, fireplaces, or external switches. Cooker hood input automatically increases extract airflow when hood runs — protects negative pressure balance. Output signal can drive a damper. CTS602 can be programmed for multi-zone Passivhaus operation including night setback and away mode.
Compact P is a Passivhaus-class plant unit best specified at the new-build design stage or as part of a deep retrofit / EnerPHit project. Typical sequence: design + sizing 4–6 weeks ahead; first-fix during construction; plant install in finished plant room; commissioning and handover with full CTS602 setup and Nilan app pairing.
Compact P is a family of variants covering everything from compact apartments to family Passivhaus to multi-unit developments. Each variant shares the core 180L hot water tank, CTS602 control, and counterflow heat exchanger architecture — but adds different heating capabilities and capacity points to suit project scope.
Compact P — anchor configuration
Up to 140 m² low-energy floor area, ventilation requirement up to 275 m³/h. 95% counterflow heat recovery (passive) plus active heat recovery via integrated heat pump. 180L hot water tank. Reversible cooling cycle. CTS602 control with HMI Touch panel. Single-phase 230V. Vertical floor-standing cabinet. The default specification for typical apartment, small house, or compact Passivhaus.
Compact S — narrow variant
Same architecture as Compact P in a 600mm-wide cabinet — 30% narrower than the standard P. The right pick for tight plant cupboards, mews infill, or apartment installs where space is constrained. Same 180L tank, same heat recovery efficiency, same control system. Slightly reduced max airflow at 375 m³/h. Quote on request.
Compact P EK — wall-mounted
Wall-mounted compact variant for installations where floor space is at a premium. 590 × 762 × 612 mm, only 38 kg, fits into false ceilings or above kitchen cabinets. Up to 180 m² coverage, 70–300 m³/h airflow. Sound levels 21–44 dB(A). Note: this variant is MVHR-only (no heat pump or hot water tank) — different scope to the Compact P range. Quote on request.
Compact P Polar — cold climate
Standard Compact P with integrated electric pre-heater on the outdoor air intake — protects the heat exchanger from icing during severe frost. Maintains full heat recovery at -15°C and below. The right pick for highland Scotland, exposed Cumbrian sites, and projects above 200m elevation where standard defrost cycles would impact comfort. Quote on request.
Compact P AIR9 — waterborne heating
Compact P with integrated air-to-water heat pump (~9 kW output) for waterborne heating to underfloor heating, radiators, or low-temperature heating circuits. Outdoor unit included. Scales the system into 200+ m² family Passivhaus territory where air-only heating would not be enough. The right pick when project brief specifies UFH or radiators. Quote on request.
Compact P GEO 3 / 6 / 9 — ground source
Compact P with integrated geothermal heat pump (3 kW, 6 kW, or 9 kW output variants) for waterborne heating from buried earth tubes or boreholes. Highest seasonal efficiency available — ground temperature is more stable than air. Right pick for rural plots with land for ground loops, and for clients prioritising long-term energy bills over capital cost. Quote on request.
Compact P XL — large dwellings
Higher-rated fans for larger family Passivhaus or multi-unit installations — 430 m³/h max airflow vs 275 m³/h on standard P. Same modular architecture, same heat recovery, same hot water tank. Combines with AIR9 or GEO modules for waterborne heating. Right pick for 4+ bedroom Passivhaus, multi-occupancy schemes, or commercial offices with elevated fresh-air demand. Quote on request.
Filter upgrade options
Standard ISO Coarse / G4-equivalent filters fitted (75% pollen, dust, soot capture). Optional upgrade to F7 fine particulate filters (ePM1 70%) for households with allergy or asthma sensitivity, or installs in high-traffic urban areas (London, motorway proximity). Front-loading filter access — homeowner-replaceable in 5 minutes. CTS602 flags filter change automatically.
Compact P is designed for long service life — typically 15–20+ years of continuous operation. Filter changes and anode monitoring are routine; refrigerant circuit is sealed for life. Nilan manufacturer warranty + CleverBloom service plan together provide the support architecture for high-spec self-build, EnerPHit, and multi-unit residential clients.
Nilan manufacturer warranty
Standard Nilan manufacturer warranty applies — typically 2 years on full unit with extended coverage on heat pump and major components. Terms confirmed at order against current Nilan general conditions. Compact P installs covered through Nilan UK / Project Ziro Ltd, with their service portal supporting fault diagnosis and warranty claims directly.
Filter change · adjustable schedule
CTS602 filter timer adjustable from 30 to 180 days. Automatic alarm when filters due. Front-loading access via top front panel — homeowner-replaceable in 5 minutes, no tools. Standard ISO Coarse / G4 filters, optional F7 upgrade for allergy-sensitive households or high-pollution urban installs. Genuine Nilan replacement filters via Nilan UK service portal.
Electronically monitored anode
Sacrificial anode in the 180L hot water tank with electronic monitoring — CTS602 alarms when replacement is due (typically 5–10 years depending on water chemistry). Unlike unmonitored anodes that fail silently and damage the tank, the alarm prevents corrosion. Hard water areas may need more frequent replacement; soft water areas extend service life.
Automatic anti-legionella cycle
CTS602 boosts the hot water tank temperature to over 60°C automatically once weekly via the integrated immersion heater — kills any legionella that could grow during normal operation at 45–50°C. Required for Building Regulations Part G compliance. Boost cycle runs at off-peak hours to minimise electricity cost. No homeowner action needed.
Heat exchanger maintenance
The plastic counterflow heat exchanger requires no defrosting or active maintenance — it operates independently. Annual visual check during service visits to confirm no debris build-up, but typically clean for the life of the unit. Compact P Polar variant adds the pre-heater coil which is also maintenance-free.
CleverBloom Passivhaus service plan
For Compact P installs, CleverBloom offers an annual service plan covering: filter changes (parts and labour), anode status verification, control parameter review, ventilation airflow re-balance check, Nilan app account audit, and CTS602 firmware version review. Quoted per project based on access and SLA requirements. Multi-unit residential pricing available.
