4-in-1 functional cycle

PKOM4A unites four functions in a single appliance: balanced ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), supply-air heating via heat pump, supply-air cooling via reversible refrigerant circuit, and 220-litre domestic hot water heating via a dedicated separate heat pump. One contract, one appliance, one footprint of 0.75 m² — replaces a separate MVHR + ASHP + hot water cylinder.

Patented dual-circuit heat pumps

Two independent heat pump circuits operate in parallel: one conditions the supply air (heating or cooling), the other heats the 220L hot water tank. Both run R1234yf refrigerant (GWP < 1) with frequency-controlled rotating piston compressors. Pichler's patent allows simultaneous cooling and DHW heating — the waste heat from cooling the supply air is recovered to heat the hot water tank. Genuine free hot water in summer.

Counterflow heat exchanger (or enthalpy)

Standard variant uses a plastic counterflow heat exchanger — 92% temperature change recovery (EN 16573), 83% PHI heat recovery efficiency. Optional enthalpy exchanger upgrade recovers humidity from extract air in winter — important in dry climates and for occupant comfort. Specified at order via the article number suffix (.S = standard, .F = enthalpy).

Reversible cooling circuit

The supply-air heat pump circuit is reversible — same hardware delivers heating in winter and cooling in summer. Cooling power up to 1,365 W via heat recovery, or 1,950 W maximum at A35 conditions. The 4-way switching valve handles seasonal changeover automatically. Real summer comfort in well-insulated Passivhaus or EnerPhit buildings without specifying a separate cooling system.

DHW heat pump cycle

A second compressor circuit dedicated to the 220L hot water tank. Heats DHW to 55°C from heat pump alone, or 65°C with the integrated 1,500 W electric heating element for legionella protection. Energy efficiency class A (80.3% per EU 812/2013), 1,274 kWh annual electricity for water heating with the L (Large) load profile. Impressed-current titanium anode protects the tank lining indefinitely without sacrificial replacement.

Bypass flap · free cooling

Summer bypass flap routes incoming outdoor air around the heat exchanger when outdoor air is cooler than indoor. Free cooling at night — pulls cool outdoor air directly into the living space without pre-warming via the recovery exchanger. Combined with the active heat pump cooling, gives PKOM4A two cooling strategies: passive bypass (free) for mild summer nights, active heat pump (efficient) for hot days.

Coverage 130 m² 80–130 m² Passivhaus living area. Hot water for a family of 4–5. PKOM4AK Classic covers up to 80 m² (smaller home variant). Trend variants (no DHW) available for projects with separate hot water source.
Airflow 250 m³/h 85–250 m³/h variable in ventilation mode. 130–250 m³/h in heating mode. PHI reference flow 175 m³/h. 4 ventilation stages selectable. External pressure capacity > 200 Pa at maximum flow.
Heat Recovery 92% 92% temperature change recovery (EN 16573, standard counterflow exchanger). 83% PHI heat recovery efficiency. Optional enthalpy exchanger recovers humidity in winter. 1.4% external / 1.9% internal leakage.
Heat Output 1,786 W 1,786 W (with HR) / 860 W (without HR) heat pump output at A2/A35, Vref 175 m³/h. Maximum 2,362 W with heat recovery. COP 5.91 with HR / 3.32 without HR. Operating outdoor temperature −15°C to +40°C.
Cooling Power 1,207 W 1,207 W with HR / 655 W without HR cooling output at A35/A27 and Vref. Maximum 1,950 W with HR / 1,365 W without HR. EER 3.29. Bypass flap for free cooling on cool summer nights — passive option supplements active heat-pump cooling.
Hot Water 220 L 220L tank (212L with optional heating coil .W variant). 1,400 W heat pump output to DHW. Up to 55°C from heat pump alone, 65°C with electric backup (1,500 W). Energy efficiency class A, 80.3% efficiency. 1,274 kWh annual electricity (Load profile L). Impressed-current titanium anode.
Refrigerant R1234yf R1234yf — GWP < 1, future-proof under UK F-gas regulations. 1,000 g fill per circuit (well below 5,000 g annual leak-check threshold). Two independent circuits — one for ventilation/space conditioning (HC), one for domestic hot water (DHW). Both circuits hermetically sealed.
Electrical 230V · 16A 230V single-phase, 50 Hz. 2,800 W maximum power consumption. 12.8 A max current. C16A line fuse. Type B current-impulse-sensitive RCD required (heat pump compatibility). Dedicated circuit recommended.

Optional heating coil in the hot water tank (.W variant) accepts external heat input from solar thermal, biomass, or secondary heat pump. Optional heating circuit module enables connection to underfloor heating zones with separate room-temperature sensors. Pichler app shows energy contribution from each source — useful for verifying real-world solar payback.

Installation

PKOM4A is a Passivhaus-class plant unit at 240 kg with substantial first-fix and electrical scope. Best specified at the new-build design stage or as part of a deep retrofit / EnerPHit project. Typical project sequence: design + sizing 4–6 weeks ahead; first-fix during construction; plant install in finished plant room; commissioning and handover via manufacturer-licensed engineer.

01 Design + Pichler sizing 4–6 weeks before site Living area, occupancy, hot water demand, and external air supply route reviewed. PKOM4A or AK Classic specified based on m² and DHW load. Counterflow or enthalpy exchanger chosen. Standard or heating-coil tank chosen. Left/right hand confirmed against plant-room layout. Façade air supply elements designed to integrate with architectural drawings. Order placed via authorised UK supply channel. 6–8 week lead time from Austria.
02 First-fix + façade ducts During construction Plant room positioned per design. Façade outdoor and exhaust air elements installed (Ø160 or Ø200 mm) — built into the building envelope before insulation and external finish. Supply and extract ductwork run to all habitable rooms. Single-phase 230V/16A circuit run to plant room with Type B current-impulse-sensitive RCD. DHW flow/return pipework, cold water inlet, condensate drain. KNX bus run if specified.
03 Plant install (240 kg) 1 day on site PKOM4A delivered on a pallet — 240 kg requires planning for delivery access and floor loading. Lifted into final plant-room position via mechanical aid (pallet truck, sack truck, or two-person lift). Connections made to ductwork (Ø160 or Ø200), DHW inlet/outlet, cold water, condensate drain, and electrical supply. TFT touch display mounted in living space and connected via telephone-installation wiring (max 100m).
04 Commissioning + handover 1 day on site Initial power-up by CleverBloom. Manufacturer-licensed commissioning engineer attends site to load licensed Pichler software, configure operating parameters, run heat pump self-test, balance the ventilation circuit, verify DHW heat pump operation, and certify the install. Pichler app paired to homeowner's network. Pichler Connect remote service activated if specified. CleverBloom hands over O&M documentation, warranty registration, filter change schedule, and service plan options.

Standard vs enthalpy heat exchanger

Standard plastic counterflow heat exchanger (.S suffix) — 92% temperature change recovery, suits typical UK climate. Optional enthalpy exchanger (.F suffix) recovers humidity from extract air in winter — beneficial for very dry indoor climates or households with low moisture generation. Specified at order.

Heating coil in hot water tank

Optional heating coil (.W suffix) integrated into the 220L hot water tank — accepts external heat input from solar thermal collectors, biomass boiler, or secondary heat pump. Tank volume reduces from 220L to 212L when coil specified. Most useful for solar-thermal-equipped homes and biomass-heated rural Passivhaus.

Trend variants — without DHW

PKOM4A Trend (130 m², 250 m³/h) and PKOM4AK Trend (80 m², 150 m³/h) — same compact heat pump combi architecture without the 220L hot water tank. Right pick for projects where DHW is provided separately by solar-thermal or another heat pump. 140 kg, 1,334 mm height (vs 2,003 mm Classic). 750 W or 580 W max power. Quote on request.

Left- vs right-handed casing

PKOM4A Classic and AK Classic are available in left-handed (article suffix L) or right-handed (suffix R) configuration — refers to the side of the unit on which duct connections, hot water connections, and electrical entry are positioned. Specified at order based on plant-room layout. No price difference between handedness.

Optional duct heating battery 1.2 kW

For very cold UK winters (extended sub-zero periods), an optional 1,200 W duct heating battery (article 08CV16121VICIAL) supplements PKOM4A heat output. Activated automatically by the controller when the heat pump alone cannot meet supply-air temperature setpoint. Ø160 mm duct connection, 375 mm installation length. Includes duct temperature sensor (40LG041920).

Optional air humidification unit

LBE 250 ARO/ALO patented air humidification unit (article 08LBE250ARO right / 08LBE250ALO left) — installed downstream of PKOM4A. Natural-evaporation principle with UVC disinfection and integrated reverse osmosis water treatment. 4.5–11.5 g/m³ humidity boost, max 2.5 L/h evaporation. For very dry indoor climates or households with sensitive occupants.

Aftercare

PKOM4A is designed for long service life in residential Passivhaus settings — typically 15–20+ years of continuous operation. Filter changes and impressed-current anode are routine; refrigerant circuit and heat pumps are sealed for life under normal use. Manufacturer warranty + CleverBloom service plan together provide the support architecture for high-spec self-build and EnerPHit clients.

Manufacturer warranty

Standard Pichler manufacturer warranty applies — terms confirmed at order against current Pichler general conditions. Typical Austrian-manufacturer warranty covers 2 years on full unit, with extended coverage available on heat pump components subject to commissioning by manufacturer-licensed engineer (which is required for warranty validity on any PKOM4A install).

Filter change · F7 + M5

F7 outdoor air filter (article 40LG050290, glass fibre, ISO ePM1 55%) and M5 extract air filter (article 40LG050280, synthetic, ISO ePM10 75%). Both replaced typically every 6 months — TFT controller flags filter change automatically based on operating hours. Genuine spare filters from Pichler authorised channels only — third-party filters may compromise heat exchanger life.

TFT filter change command

"Bitte Luftfilter wechseln!" prompt appears on the TFT touch controller when filters are due. Field-replaceable by homeowner via the filter inspection flap — no tools, 5-minute job. Reset the timer via the controller after replacement. If filters not changed when prompted, the system continues operating but power consumption increases and heat recovery efficiency degrades.

Impressed-current anode

PKOM4A Classic uses a titanium impressed-current anode in the 220L hot water tank — applies a controlled electrical potential to protect the steel tank lining against corrosion. Unlike sacrificial magnesium anodes, the impressed-current anode does NOT require periodic replacement under normal water chemistry. Verified via the dedicated anode circuit board — fault status reported via TFT and Pichler app.

Refrigerant inspection

R1234yf refrigerant circuits are sealed for life. UK F-gas regulations apply — inspection by F-Gas registered engineer required only at end-of-life or after refrigerant work. PKOM4A's 1,000g fill is well below the 5,000g threshold for annual leak checks, making routine compliance simple. Refrigerant choice (R1234yf, GWP < 1) future-proofs the install against UK F-gas tightening.

CleverBloom Passivhaus service plan

For PKOM4A installs, CleverBloom offers an annual service plan covering: filter changes (parts and labour), coil and condensate drain inspection, anode status verification, control parameter review, ventilation airflow re-balance check, Pichler app account audit, and TFT firmware version review. Quoted per project based on access and SLA requirements.
