Driver arrives

An EV pulls up to the charge bay. The driver could be a staff member, a paying customer, a hotel guest, a tenant, or a member of a public roaming network (Monta, Bonnet, Octopus Electroverse). The Smart Wall doesn't care who they are — it just needs to know who's authorised to start a session and how that session will be billed.

Authenticate

Three options. Tap an RFID card pre-registered with the back-office (typical for staff and regulars). Scan the QR code printed on the unit with the back-office app (typical for first-time customers — Monta or similar handles payment registration in-app). Or use a roaming network app like Octopus Electroverse, which authorises through OCPI bridge to the back-office without any local registration.

Negotiate the charge

Once authenticated, the driver plugs in. Type 2 socket negotiates with the EV the same way as any AC charger — Control Pilot signal handles current handshake. Three-phase-capable EV draws up to 22 kW; single-phase-only EV draws 7.4 kW. The Smart Wall's hardware is identical to the home Octa Wall — what's different is the OCPP 1.6J firmware running on top.

Meter and bill

Throughout the session, the charger reports kWh delivered to the back-office every 60 seconds. At session end (driver unplugs or hits stop in the app), the back-office calculates the bill — your configured tariff: per-kWh rate, per-session rate, time-of-day tiered pricing, free for staff and paid for visitors, or any combination. Payment processes automatically against the driver's stored card.

Settle revenue

Back-office accumulates session revenue per charger. Monta and similar platforms settle to your bank account on a weekly or monthly schedule, less their platform fee (typically 7–12% depending on the plan) and the payment processor's card fee. Your CSV export of monthly session data integrates directly into Xero, QuickBooks, or any standard accounting platform.

Balance against site load

CT clamp on the site's incoming supply tells the Smart Wall the total current draw. If your business is at peak load (lunch rush at a restaurant, evening class at a gym, midday at an office), the charger backs off proportionally to keep total demand within the main fuse rating. Particularly important for older commercial premises with constrained 100 A supplies where retrofit charging would otherwise need a DNO upgrade.

Max Output 22 kW Maximum AC output on a three-phase 400 V supply. Typical commercial premises (offices, gyms, hospitality, retail) have three-phase as standard, so most Smart Wall installs deliver the full 22 kW. About 100 miles of range per hour of charging for a typical EV.
Single-Phase 7.4 kW Same hardware on single-phase supply caps at 7.4 kW. Some small commercial premises (corner shops, micro-offices, small B&Bs) are still on single-phase — the Smart Wall installs at 7.4 kW with full OCPP billing functionality intact.
Output Current 32 A Maximum output current per phase. Driven by the customer's EV's onboard charger score — three-phase-capable EVs draw 32 A; older single-phase-only EVs cap at single-phase 32 A.

Control

The Smart Wall connects to an OCPP 1.6 JSON back-office of your choice — Monta is the default for small-business and hospitality sites, Driivz for fleet operators, EV.energy for landlord-tenant scenarios, GreenFlux for portfolio-scale property managers. Same charger, different software platform depending on your billing model.

Monta back-office · default pick

Monta is the most widely used OCPP back-office for small UK commercial and hospitality sites. Smart Wall connects out of the box. Set tariffs in the Monta web portal — per-kWh, per-session, time-of-day tiered, member-vs-visitor pricing. Customers pay through the Monta app or scan a QR on the unit. Settles weekly to your bank account. Typical Monta fee around 7–12% depending on plan tier.

Three authentication methods

RFID tap (cards pre-registered to staff, members, regulars), QR code scan (Monta or other back-office app captures the unit ID and authorises payment), roaming app (Octopus Electroverse, Bonnet, Plugsurfing connect via OCPI to your back-office). Configure all three or just the one that fits your site model.

Tiered tariff structures

Set different rates for different user groups. Staff RFID card: free (charging as a workplace benefit). Member RFID: discounted per-kWh rate. Visitor app scan: full per-kWh rate plus a per-session connection fee. Configurable per RFID group in the back-office without firmware changes — adjust pricing weekly if energy costs change.

Time-of-day pricing

Higher rate during peak demand (evening 4–7 PM matching the grid peak), lower rate overnight (when your business closes and the charger can absorb cheap grid). Useful for sites that want overnight charging by staff at near-cost while charging visitors a premium during business hours. Configured per-tariff in the back-office.

Real-time monitoring

Back-office dashboard shows live session status, monthly revenue, utilisation rate, fault alerts, and energy cost reconciliation against your electricity bill. Critical for hospitality sites where the charger is an amenity — if a customer can't charge, the back-office tells you before the customer complains at reception.

CSV / API session export

Every session exportable — driver ID, RFID, start/end time, kWh delivered, revenue, cost. CSV download for monthly accounting, REST API for automated integration with Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, or custom revenue dashboards. Critical for fleet operators where mileage-and-cost reconciliation must integrate with company-car-tax reporting.

Roaming networks

Monta and most other back-offices include OCPI roaming — your Smart Wall appears on the Octopus Electroverse map, Bonnet network, Plugsurfing, Chargemap. Drivers using any of these apps can charge at your site; the roaming network handles payment and settles to you net of their roaming fee. Useful for sites in destination locations (hotels, restaurants, retail) where casual visitor traffic justifies network exposure.

Whole-site load management

CT clamp on the site's main supply lets the Smart Wall throttle output when other site loads peak. Restaurant kitchen at lunch service, gym fitness class evening peak, office HVAC midday — the Smart Wall coordinates so total site demand stays within main fuse rating. Particularly important for retrofit installs on existing commercial supplies.

Multiple chargers · same back-office

A single Monta or Driivz account supports unlimited chargers. Add a second Smart Wall as your site grows, scale to a Smart Wall Triple 66 kW for higher-traffic sites, or expand across multiple property locations — all on one account, one settlement schedule, one set of tariff configurations. No per-charger account proliferation.

01 Discovery call Free · phone or video Discuss the installation site, expected users, billing model, and the most suitable back-office platform. We review the site's electrical supply, available consumer-unit capacity, cable routing, and charger location, then provide a fixed-price quotation within 48 hours, including DNO notification and Workplace Charging Scheme guidance where applicable.
02 Fit day 5–6 hours · on site Engineer completes final electrical checks, installs the dedicated circuit and SWA cable, mounts the charger, configures the back-office platform, installs CT clamps where required, registers RFID cards, and performs full end-to-end commissioning, including a live charging session and payment test.
03 Team training 1 hour · on handover We train your team on the back-office portal, tariff management, RFID cards, reporting, troubleshooting, and customer support workflows. DNO confirmation and documentation are handed over, Workplace Charging Scheme paperwork is completed where applicable, and aftercare support is provided.

Components

Seven components make up the Smart Wall — the Type 2 socket, the AC supply, the CT clamp, earthing, the network module (with 4G LTE backup standard at commercial spec), the OCPP back-office endpoint, and the RFID reader. The communication infrastructure is the structural distinguisher from the home Wall — billing means the unit must stay reliably online.

1 · Type 2 socket

IEC 62196-2 socket — the European standard for AC EV charging. Identical to the home Octa Wall socket. Untethered means drivers bring their own Type 2 cable; some commercial sites add a tethered cable option for guest convenience (configurable at order). Seven pins: three live phases, neutral, earth, Control Pilot, Proximity Pilot.

2 · AC supply terminals

Three live phases (or single phase if that's what the site has), neutral, and earth. Wired in copper SWA cable from a dedicated 32 A or 40 A breaker in the commercial consumer unit. Cable size sized to the run length and ambient. Type B RCD typically installed for DC fault protection on commercial premises (built-in 6 mA DC detection on the charger satisfies most installs).

3 · CT clamp · site load

CT clamp on the site's main incoming supply. Measures total commercial load in real time so the charger can adjust output when kitchen, HVAC, gym equipment, or office loads peak. Without the CT clamp the charger runs at fixed maximum rate — fine for sites with plenty of headroom, problematic for retrofit installs on tight 100 A supplies.

4 · 4G LTE module · standard

4G LTE backup is fitted as standard on Smart Wall (optional on the home Octa Wall). Critical for billing: if the site Wi-Fi drops out, the OCPP back-office connection drops, sessions can't authenticate or settle. 4G LTE maintains the back-office link independently of site internet. SIM included; pay-as-you-go top-up via the OCTA app.

5 · OCPP 1.6J endpoint

The unit speaks OCPP 1.6 JSON natively — the industry-standard protocol for EV charger billing. Connects to any compliant back-office via WebSocket. Endpoint URL configured at commissioning. Authentication via API key or certificate. Once connected, the back-office handles all session lifecycle: authentication, metering, billing, settlement.

6 · RFID reader

Mifare Classic and DESFire RFID reader built into the unit. Reads ISO 14443-A cards — the same standard used by hotel key cards, gym membership cards, Transport for London Oyster, and many corporate ID systems. Existing membership cards can often double as charging access cards with back-office configuration, no card reissue required.

ORDER CONFIGURATION
7 · Cable: Tethered vs Untethered

Untethered (Socket) — £1439 total. Customers bring their own Type 2 cable. Flexible for hospitality and gym sites where drivers vary widely; cable lives off the wall when not in use, no maintenance liability for damaged cables. The right pick for boutique hotels, gym member parks, BTR landlord car parks, and most workplace amenity bays.

Tethered (with Cable) — £1439 total. Fixed 5 m or 7.5 m Type 2 cable permanently attached. No friction for customers without their own cable, no risk of cable theft from boot, more professional impression at premium hospitality sites. The right pick for driving instructor businesses (cable always to hand), premium hotels where guest convenience is part of the brand, and dealership demonstrator-handover bays where the customer may not have their own cable yet.

Aftercare

Commercial aftercare matters more than home aftercare — every hour the charger is offline is lost revenue and potentially angry customers. What OCTA covers as standard, plus CleverBloom's commercial monitoring options.

3 year manufacturer warranty

OCTA warrants the Smart Wall for 3 years from commissioning. Covers the unit electronics, the Type 2 socket, the OCPP firmware, the 4G LTE module, and the RFID reader. Extended warranty to 5 years available where the system is on CleverBloom's commercial monitoring service plan. Spare parts hold in UK stock through the distributor channel.

UCP commercial heritage

The same UCP platform runs Smart Wall installations at Volvo, Jaguar, and Land Rover dealership sites — commercial operating intensity proven across years of customer-facing use. The home Octa Wall is the same DNA scaled down; the Smart Wall is the platform in its native commercial environment. Lower failure rates than the consumer-only EV charger brands.

4G LTE redundancy

The 4G LTE backup connection (standard on commercial spec, optional on home) keeps the unit online when site Wi-Fi drops. Critical for billing — every offline hour is sessions that can't authenticate and revenue that can't settle. Site internet drops happen; the 4G fallback means the charger doesn't care.

Workplace Charging Scheme grant

The UK government Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides up to £350 per socket (max £15,000 per applicant) for businesses installing EV charging. The Smart Wall is OZEV-approved and WCS-eligible. CleverBloom submits the application on your behalf as part of the install scope — paperwork handled, grant credited against your invoice.

Back-office tariff vigilance

Tariffs that don't track wholesale electricity cost are the silent killer of commercial charger economics.
