Side-connected horizontal mount

All four duct connections are on the side of the unit (not the top), and the unit lies horizontally rather than standing vertically. Designed for ceiling voids, lofts, attics, suspended ceilings, or floor-mounted basement plant — anywhere a wall-mounted vertical unit (like the VTR) won't fit. L or R hand variants suit different room layouts.

Whole-building balanced flow

A single VSR 500 unit serves buildings up to 400 m² — larger family homes, HMOs, small offices, classrooms, retail. Filtered fresh air is supplied to habitable rooms; stale air is extracted from wet rooms and high-occupancy zones. Two EC RadiCal fans run continuously to maintain balanced pressure across the whole building.

Rotary heat exchanger

A slowly-rotating aluminium wheel sits between the supply and extract air streams. Each side absorbs heat from the warm air it passes, then releases it into the cooler air on the next rotation. This design also transfers some humidity back into the supply — preventing winter dryness without an enthalpy core.

F7 + M5 filter set

Factory-fitted F7 (ISO ePM1 60%) on the supply side and M5 (ISO ePM10 50%) on the extract side. F7 catches pollen, fine dust, smog particles, combustion residue. The control panel's filter timer flags replacement, typically every 6–12 months depending on outdoor air quality and occupancy density.

Demand-driven control

A built-in humidity sensor in the extract air enables demand control as standard. Optional CO₂ sensor adds occupancy-driven control — particularly important for HMOs, classrooms, and offices where the building load varies through the day. Manual override always available via the SAVE Touch panel.

Built-in 1670 W reheater

An integrated electric reheater downstream of the rotor maintains a comfortable supply air temperature even at outdoor temperatures of −10°C. The reheater is thermostatically controlled — only draws power when needed. Required for Passivhaus comfort criterion (supply air ≥16.5°C at −10°C outdoor).

Airflow 435 m³/h Passivhaus certified airflow range 250–435 m³/h. Demand-driven control modulates between basic ventilation (70–80%), standard (100%), and increased (130%) modes.
Heat Recovery 80% Variable-speed rotary heat exchanger with moisture transfer. Passivhaus-certified 80% heat recovery efficiency at 250–435 m³/h — slightly higher than the smaller VSR 300 sister (78%). Moisture transfer back to supply air prevents winter dryness.
Sound Level 56.9 dB(A) Sound power 56.9 dB(A) at the device, 435 m³/h (per PHI test). Exceeds the 35 dB(A) Passivhaus comfort target — the unit must be installed acoustically separated from living areas, and silencers are required on supply and extract ducts. Higher than the 300-class unit due to larger fan capacity.
Energy Class Passivhaus Passivhaus certified component (ID 1056vs03). Eurovent certified. ErP compliant. Suitable for Building Regulations Part F, EnerPHit retrofits, larger family homes, HMOs, small commercial scopes (offices, classrooms, retail).
Power Use 0.38 Wh/m³ Specific electric power 0.38 Wh/m³ Passivhaus certified. Standby power 8.2 W. Two EC RadiCal fans on 230 V single-phase mains. Internal/external leakage 2.94% / 0.76%. Efficiency ratio L = 0.63.
Frost Protection 1670 W Rotary heat exchanger handles low outdoor temperatures without external pre-heater. Integrated 1670 W electric supply heater maintains supply air ≥16.5°C at outdoor temperatures down to −10°C — meets Passivhaus comfort criterion.
Construction Side connect Double-skinned, fully insulated cabinet. Designed to lie horizontally with side-connected ducts. Inspection hatches on both sides for service access. Heat exchanger removable from side. Left or right hand variants — confirm at order.

Control

The VSR 500 ships with a SAVE Touch colour touchscreen panel that connects to the unit via the connection board. The panel can be mounted on the unit itself or remoted to a wall position — useful when the plant unit lives in the loft or ceiling void. Plus optional SAVE CONNECT WiFi/cloud, Modbus RS-485, and demand-control sensors.

SAVE Touch panel (wall or unit)

Full-colour touchscreen, user-friendly interface. Connects via the side connection board. Mount on the unit if it's accessible, or wire to a convenient wall position elsewhere in the home — ideal when the plant lives in the loft. Multiple panels can be daisy-chained for larger installs.

SAVE CONNECT (WiFi)

Optional WiFi accessory module for remote access via the SAVE Connect mobile app (iOS and Android) or the homesolutions.systemair.com web portal. Local or remote control, no LAN cabling required, links to Amazon Alexa and Google Home for voice control.

Modbus RS-485

Standard on every unit. Direct integration with home automation and BMS systems via Modbus protocol — useful for commercial installs (offices, classrooms) where ventilation needs to integrate with heating and lighting control.

Built-in humidity sensor

Standard — fitted in the extract air chamber from factory. Demand control is enabled out of the box: the unit ramps fan speed when extract RH rises (shower, cooking, drying laundry). No optional sensor needed for this.

Optional CO₂ sensor

Add-on CO₂ sensor for occupancy-driven control. Useful for home offices, classrooms, and bedrooms where humidity-only control isn't enough. Wires directly into the connection board on the side of the unit.

Week schedule

Built into the SAVE Touch controller — set up to two airflow time periods per day across each day of the week. Useful for homes with predictable occupancy patterns (away during working hours, busier in evenings).

Boost / refresh mode

Timed boost at high speed for clearing odours after cooking, fast air change after gatherings, or post-shower humidity. Returns to scheduled airflow automatically. Triggered via touchscreen, app, or external switch.

Automatic summer mode

When indoor temperature exceeds the set threshold and outdoor air is cooler, the unit automatically switches to summer operation — cooling recovery without active heat exchange. Returns to winter operation as conditions change.

Installation

Centralised whole-building MVHR is a significantly bigger install than a wall unit — typically 4–6 days on site for a VSR 500 deployment, plus a design phase. The VSR 500 covers larger family homes, HMOs, small offices and classrooms — anywhere a horizontal mount in a loft, ceiling void or basement plinth is the right plant location.

01 Design 2–3 weeks before site Room-by-room (or zone-by-zone) ventilation calculation per Building Regulations Part F and Passivhaus methodology. Plant location confirmed (loft, ceiling void, basement). L or R hand orientation chosen to suit ductwork. Supply and extract terminals marked on architect drawings. Acoustic silencer positions specified. BMS interface points specified for commercial scopes.
02 First-fix ductwork 2–3 days on site Ductwork installed before plasterboard / floor finishes / plenum closeouts. Side-connected ducts run horizontally from the unit. Larger trunking diameters than 300-class installs to handle the higher airflow. Insulated duct in unconditioned voids. Acoustic silencers fitted on supply and extract — required per the Passivhaus certificate.
03 Plant install 1 day on site VSR 500 lifted into position (loft floor, ceiling void or basement plinth — typically a two-person lift due to weight). Heat exchanger removable for the install to make the unit lighter. Four side-connected duct unions made. Mains 230 V supply. SAVE Touch panel routed from the unit to a wall position. Modbus wired to BMS if commercial.
04 Commission 1 day Run the SAVE Touch start-up wizard. Set airflow per design (l/s, m³/h or %), calibrate to filter type. Measure and verify with a Testo 405i anemometer at every supply and extract terminal per BESA DW/143. For commercial scopes: configure BMS handshake and verify Modbus point register. Hand over operating manual, app credentials, filter change schedule.

Components

Centralised whole-building MVHR. The VSR 500 plant unit sits horizontally in a service location (loft, ceiling void, suspended ceiling, basement floor) with four side-connected duct runs to fresh-air intake, exhaust outlet, supply manifold, and extract manifold.

VSR 500 plant unit

Double-skinned panels, fully insulated cabinet. Designed to lie horizontally — sits on a loft floor, in a ceiling void, or on a basement plinth. Larger footprint than the VSR 300 to handle higher airflow capacity. Left or right hand variants — confirm at order.

Rotary heat exchanger

Variable-speed rotating exchanger with moisture transfer. Removable for cleaning every 3 years (or sooner if airflow performance drops). Drive belt is the only consumable hardware in the rotor mechanism. Larger rotor than the 300-class for higher recovery efficiency (80% vs 78%).

EC RadiCal fans

Two RadiCal impeller fans with EC (electronically commutated) motors. Modern brushless DC technology — quiet operation, low specific fan power (0.38 Wh/m³ Passivhaus certified), 50% less energy than equivalent AC motors. Lifetime-lubricated bearings, maintenance-free.

Four side-connected duct spigots

All four ducts (intake, exhaust, supply, extract) connect on the side of the unit — the defining VSR architecture. Allows ductwork to run horizontally from the unit into a flat ceiling void or loft, without the vertical clearance that top-connected units (like the VTR series) need.

F7 + M5 filter set

Factory-fitted F7 (ISO ePM1 60%) supply filter and M5 (ISO ePM10 50%) extract filter. Tool-free replacement via the side inspection hatches. Higher-grade alternatives available for urban or pollen-heavy environments. Replacement filter kit ~£115 from UK distributors.

Integrated 1670 W reheater

Electric reheater downstream of the rotor — maintains supply air ≥16.5°C even at outdoor temperatures of -10°C (Passivhaus comfort criterion). Thermostatically controlled, only draws power when needed.

Inspection hatches both sides

Service access from either side of the unit — a meaningful advantage when the plant lives in a tight loft, ceiling void or basement plinth. Means the rotor, fans, and filters can be reached without dismantling adjacent ductwork.

Modbus RS-485 + SAVE CONNECT

Modbus RS-485 standard for BMS integration on commercial scopes. Optional SAVE CONNECT WiFi cloud module enables remote control via the SAVE Connect mobile app. Both interfaces wire into the connection board on the side of the unit.

Aftercare

The VSR 500 is engineered for long-term low-touch operation. Filters change in under five minutes; the rotor is removable for periodic cleaning; the ductwork itself has no moving parts. Inspection hatches on both sides simplify service access in tight loft spaces.

2-year manufacturer warranty

Systemair provides a 2-year manufacturer warranty on the unit as standard. Built to Eurovent certification and ErP compliance with global service network. Mature platform — Systemair has been making rotary MVHR since 1974.

Filter change every 6–12 months

F7 supply (ePM1 60%) and M5 extract (ePM10 50%) filters, accessed via the side inspection hatches. Tool-free replacement. The SAVE Touch panel flags when change is due (default 12 months, adjustable 3–15 months). Genuine Systemair replacement filter kit ~£115 from UK distributors.

Removable rotary exchanger

The heat exchanger lifts out from the side for cleaning every 3 years (or sooner if airflow performance drops). Wash in hot soapy water (no ammonia detergents). Both-sided access makes servicing in loft spaces significantly easier than top-only-access units.

Drive belt — replaceable

A rubber drive belt rotates the heat exchanger via the rotor motor. The SAVE Touch controller flags an alarm if the belt slips or breaks. Replacement is straightforward — Systemair supplies the belt as a service spare. Plan for one belt change in a 10-year service life.

Ductwork — no scheduled maintenance

Once correctly installed and balanced, modern smooth-bore plastic ductwork runs maintenance-free. Periodic visual inspection of intake/exhaust grilles for leaf or debris accumulation is the only routine task.

Optional CleverBloom service plan

For HMOs, commercial scopes, and homeowners who don't want to climb into the loft annually, CleverBloom offers a yearly visit covering filter change, rotor inspection, flow rate verification with anemometer, and any sensor recalibration. Particularly relevant for HMO landlords with multiple units to manage.
