1 · Substrate / framing

Direct-fix to existing concrete or timber ceiling structures, or suspended on a Troldtekt-specified metal grid for level adjustment and services routing. The grid option is the more common commercial install — gives space above for ductwork, electrical, sprinkler pipework, and LED driver gear.

2 · Acoustic backing (optional)

For higher acoustic performance, mineral wool batt sits in the cavity behind the Troldtekt panels. The combination of Troldtekt absorption at the surface plus mineral wool in the cavity behind shifts the absorption curve toward lower frequencies — useful in restaurants where bass-frequency reverb is the binding constraint, and in studio applications.

3 · Troldtekt Plus panel

25 mm Plus-grade panel — standard ceiling specification thickness. Panels typically 600 × 600 mm or 600 × 1200 mm. Edge profile available square (butt-jointed visible joint) or rebated (recessed shadow gap). Cut on site with a fine-tooth blade where openings or services penetrations need adjustment.

4 · Fixing pattern

Direct-fix uses screws or specialist Troldtekt nails through the panel face into the substrate above; suspended grid uses standard T-grid carriers with Troldtekt's specified clips. The fixing pattern is typically 4–6 per m² depending on panel size and orientation. Heads recessed and either left visible (architectural) or filled.

5 · Services penetrations

Recessed luminaires, sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, ductwork diffusers — all cut into the panels on site. Troldtekt accepts standard recessed-fitting holes; the cement-bonded surface is dimensionally stable around penetrations and doesn't fray or shed fibres at cut edges.

6 · Surface finish

Natural grey (cement colour, no finish), factory-painted white (RAL 9010), or custom paint colours. Painting can be done on site with breathable mineral paint — the cement substrate accepts paint directly without primer. The visible texture stays expressed through any colour finish.

FSC-certified Danish spruce

Norwegian spruce sourced from FSC-certified Danish and Northern European managed forests near Troldtekt's manufacturing site in Troldhede, Jutland. Wood fibre is the byproduct of dimensional sawmill output — Troldtekt uses material that would otherwise be wood waste.

Portland cement binder

Standard CEM I Portland cement binds the wood wool fibres into the rigid panel structure. The cement provides the fire performance (A2/B classification), the dimensional stability for ceiling-grade installation, and the alkalinity that protects the wood fibre from microbial attack over the panel's service life.

No resin · no off-gassing

The wood and the cement are the entire material stack. No phenolic or melamine resin, no formaldehyde, no flame retardant chemistry, no surface coating that off-gases. The cement matrix is alkaline (pH ~12) — mould species can't colonise; the wood fibre is protected by the cement chemistry through service.

Fire: Euroclass A2 / B

Most Troldtekt grades test A2-s1,d0 (non-combustible, lowest smoke, no flaming droplets); some test B-s1,d0 depending on density and surface treatment. Both are acceptable across UK commercial ceiling scopes including escape routes, restaurant kitchens, and assembly spaces under Approved Document B.

Cradle-to-Cradle Silver

Independent C2C certification covers material health, material reutilisation, renewable energy use, water stewardship, and social fairness across Troldtekt's full manufacturing chain. Silver is the second-highest C2C tier; only a handful of architectural products globally hold the certification at this level.

Troldtekt has manufactured cement-bonded wood wool panels at the Troldhede facility in Jutland since 1935 — 90 years of continuous production. The chemistry is mature; installations from the 1950s and 60s remain in service in Danish schools, churches, and public buildings.

No annual service required

No moving part, no electrical component, no consumable. Standard architectural ceiling maintenance — visual inspection every 5–10 years on weather-exposed elevations (rare on Troldtekt, which is almost always specified internally), dust removal with a soft vacuum brush as needed.

Repaintable for refresh

The painted finish can be refreshed with breathable mineral paint at any point in the panel's service life — restaurant rebrands, hotel-room refurbishments, gallery space recolouring all happen on the existing Troldtekt without disturbing the panels. The surface texture stays expressed through any colour change.

Mineral wool acoustic backing

For projects targeting specific low-frequency reverberation-time figures (restaurant bass management, studio control rooms), mineral wool batt in the cavity behind the Troldtekt panels extends the absorption curve toward lower frequencies. Often specified by acoustic consultants as a paired scope; CleverBloom installs both as a single sequence.

Where the Troldtekt sits on a suspended grid, the cavity above carries ductwork, electrical, sprinkler, and LED driver gear. Coordination with the M&E consultant at design stage matters — services that interrupt the panel face are cut on site, but services that need access for maintenance need designed positions before fixing.

Cradle-to-Cradle return path

At end of building life, Troldtekt panels can be returned to Troldtekt's manufacturing facility for re-processing into the input stream. The wood fibre and the cement are both recoverable; no glue, no resin, no foil backing to separate. One of the few architectural products with a published reverse-logistics route.
