Slots between the existing joists

Suspended timber floors have parallel joists with empty space between them. Wunda Joist fills that space with the heating pipe system — the pipe heats the underside of the floorboards, which then radiate warmth into the room above. No floor build-up, no doors to re-hang.

Two ways to route the pipe

Option 1: insulation panels coated with 200-micron aluminium — the same Rapid Response top layer for fast heat transfer. Option 2: rigid aluminium spreader plates with omega-shaped channels that grip the pipe. Wunda specifies the right option per project.

Insulation goes between, heat goes up

Below the heating layer is insulation that pushes heat upwards into the floor above instead of letting it escape downwards into the ceiling below. With proper insulation, around 90% of the heat ends up in the room above — where you want it.

Floor goes back on top, unchanged

Once the heating system is in place, the original floorboards (or replacement boards if needed) go back on top. No floor build-up means no door re-hanging, no skirting board adjustments, no cosmetic disruption.

Heat-pump-friendly water temperature

Joist UFH works at water temperatures of 35–45°C — right in a heat pump's efficient range. Combined with insulation, this delivers comfortable warmth at the floor surface without needing the high water temperatures that radiators demand.

Period properties — sympathetic retrofit

For period homes with original timber floors, Joist UFH is often the only sympathetic option — the historic floorboards stay; the heating goes underneath. No tearing up of the floor surface, no concrete, no aesthetic compromise.

Easy controls

WundaSmart wireless thermostats — one per room. Set targets and schedules from your phone. Each room runs on its own programme.

WundaSmart app · iOS / Android

Full system control from your phone. Set each room’s temperature and weekly schedule. Holiday mode drops everything to frost protection. Quick overrides for one-off changes.

Per-room thermostats

A small wireless thermostat in each room reads the actual room temperature and signals the manifold to open or close that room’s valve. Real per-room control — not a one-stat-rules-them-all setup.

Weekly scheduling

Bedrooms cooler than living areas at night. Kitchen warm at breakfast and dinner times. Weekends different from weekdays. Set once on the app and the schedule runs automatically.

Geofencing (optional)

The app can detect when no one is home (based on your phone’s location) and drop the heating accordingly. Heats up before you arrive. Optional — off by default.

Voice control

Works with Alexa and Google Home. “Hey Alexa, set the kitchen to 21 degrees” — done. Useful for hands-busy moments in the kitchen.

CleverBloom can help

Setting up the room schedules to match your routine is something we can walk you through at install — or any time after by phone or app share.

Installation

Joist UFH is most efficient at first-fix in a new build, or during a major renovation when floorboards are already coming up. Retrofit possible whenever flooring needs lifting for other works.

01 Free design 3-5 working days Send Wunda the floor plans plus measurements of joist spacing and depth. They'll specify the right system option (insulation panel vs spreader plate), pipe layout, and zoning. Free service, no commitment.
02 Lift the floorboards Half day per room Existing floorboards lifted, set aside for re-fit. Joists exposed. If the existing joists need extra noggins or pipe-routing notches, the builder cuts those at this stage. Pipe routes need to clear structural elements.
03 Install the heating system 1-2 days per ~50 m² Insulation panels or spreader plates fitted into the joist bays. Pipe routed through the channels following the design. Pipes connected to the manifold (usually in a cupboard or under-stairs space).
04 Re-lay floor & commission Half day Floor goes back on top — the original boards or new replacements. Heating engineer pressure-tests the loops, balances flow rates per zone, and connects to the heat source. System ready to run.

Components

What’s in a Wunda between-joist UFH system — the parts that add underfloor heating to a suspended timber floor without raising the floor height.

1 · Insulation panels (or plates)

The system comes in two versions. The insulation-panel version uses pre-grooved foam panels that sit between the joists with the pipe in the grooves. The plate version uses aluminium spreader plates clipped to the underside of the floorboards above. Both add zero height to the finished floor.

2 · PE-Xa heating pipe

12 mm cross-linked polyethylene pipe carries warm water across each joist bay. Flexible (bends around joists without kinking), oxygen-tight, 50-year working life. Same pipe as the overfloor and screed Wunda systems.

3 · Aluminium heat-spreader plates

Thin aluminium plates wrap around the pipe and clip to the underside of the floorboards above. They conduct heat sideways across the full floor area — warm floor, not warm strips.

4 · Edge insulation strip

Strip of foam insulation around the perimeter of each room. Allows the floor to expand and contract slightly with temperature changes. Standard for any wet UFH install.

5 · Manifold

Sits in a small wall-mounted cabinet (utility room, hall cupboard). All the heating pipes meet here. Houses the circulating pump, flow meters, and a mixing valve to set the system flow temperature.

6 · Per-zone actuators

Small electric valves on the manifold — one per heating zone. Open and close based on the room thermostat. Lets each room run at its own temperature on its own schedule.

7 · WundaSmart wireless thermostats

Battery-powered wireless thermostats — one per room. Set targets, schedules, and holiday mode from your phone. Pairs with the manifold for per-room control.

8 · CleverBloom can help

For period property retrofits where lifting the floor is the only access, we coordinate with your builder during the floor-up phase, design the pipe layout, and commission the system once the floor goes back down.

Aftercare

Joist UFH has no consumable parts under the floor. The pipework runs for the life of the building. Routine attention is at the manifold — usually included in the boiler or heat-pump annual service.

Lifetime guarantee on the pipe

Wunda's heating pipe carries a lifetime guarantee against material defects. The oxygen barrier prevents oxygen ingress, the main cause of pipe deterioration in heating systems.

Annual check at the manifold

Air vent, flow rates per zone, actuator function. About 30 minutes per manifold. Usually combined with the boiler or heat-pump annual service.

Treated water on the heating side

System water must include a rust inhibitor and pass through a magnetic filter, like any wet heating system. The inhibitor pays back through cleaner pipework and longer pump life.

Floorboards — standard care

Once re-fitted, the floorboards behave exactly as before — cleaning, polishing, and refinishing all done normally. The heating system underneath has no impact on floor maintenance.

Easy access if ever needed

If a pipe is ever damaged, the relevant floorboards lift to expose the pipe in its bay. Repair without disturbing the rest of the system. Rare in practice; oxygen-barrier pipe lasts decades.

UK manufacturer support

Wunda Group is in Chepstow, Wales — UK design, UK manufacture, UK warranty. Their care team responds 6 days a week. CleverBloom handles design specification and project coordination with the builder.
