High-density foam boards (EPS 400) lay directly on top of your existing floor — concrete, timber, even old tiles. No digging, no concrete pour, no two-week building site. The boards take the weight of normal furniture and foot traffic.
Each board has a 200-micron aluminium top layer that spreads heat evenly across the floor surface. Channels in the board hold the heating pipe in place. The aluminium is what gives this system its fast response — heat transfers to the floor in minutes, not hours.
Flexible heating pipe (oxygen-barrier multilayer) runs through the channels in the boards. From the manifold in the cupboard, water flows out through the pipe loops, gives heat to the floor, and returns. One manifold can serve a whole floor of zones.
Tiles bed on directly with flexible adhesive. Engineered wood, laminate, LVT, or carpet float on top. The total floor build-up is around 15–20 mm — usually low enough that the door doesn't need re-hanging.
Because there's no big mass of concrete to heat up, the system warms the room in about half an hour from cold. And it cools down just as fast when you turn it off — meaning you don't pay to heat empty rooms in the evening.
Rapid Response works at water temperatures as low as 30°C — far below what an old radiator needs. That's exactly the range where heat pumps run most efficiently. Lower water temp, higher efficiency, lower bills with a heat pump.
WundaSmart wireless thermostats — one per room. Set targets and schedules from your phone. Each room runs on its own programme.
WundaSmart app · iOS / Android
Full system control from your phone. Set each room’s temperature and weekly schedule. Holiday mode drops everything to frost protection. Quick overrides for one-off changes.
Per-room thermostats
A small wireless thermostat in each room reads the actual room temperature and signals the manifold to open or close that room’s valve. Real per-room control — not a one-stat-rules-them-all setup.
Weekly scheduling
Bedrooms cooler than living areas at night. Kitchen warm at breakfast and dinner times. Weekends different from weekdays. Set once on the app and the schedule runs automatically.
Geofencing (optional)
The app can detect when no one is home (based on your phone’s location) and drop the heating accordingly. Heats up before you arrive. Optional — off by default.
Voice control
Works with Alexa and Google Home. “Hey Alexa, set the kitchen to 21 degrees” — done. Useful for hands-busy moments in the kitchen.
CleverBloom can help
Setting up the room schedules to match your routine is something we can walk you through at install — or any time after by phone or app share.
Rapid Response is the easiest UFH system to retrofit. Send Wunda your floor plans for a free system design. Most projects can be installed by the householder's usual builder, with a heating engineer for the manifold connection.
What’s in a Wunda Rapid Response® overfloor system — the parts that turn an existing floor into low-temperature underfloor heating in about a weekend.
1 · 20 mm grooved insulation boards
The structural part of the system. Pre-grooved high-density insulation panels lay directly on top of your existing floor. The grooves hold the heating pipe in place. Adds just 20 mm to your floor build-up.
2 · PE-Xa heating pipe
12 mm cross-linked polyethylene pipe carries warm water through the floor. PE-Xa is highly flexible (bends into curves without kinking), durable (50-year working life), and oxygen-tight (won’t corrode metal parts in your heating system).
3 · Aluminium spreader plates
Thin aluminium plates clip into the grooves and wrap around the pipe. They conduct heat sideways from the pipe across the whole floor area — warm floor, not just warm pipes.
4 · Manifold
The control hub. Sits in a small wall-mounted cabinet (often a utility room or under-stairs cupboard). All the heating pipes meet here. Houses the circulating pump, flow meters, and a small mixing valve to set the system flow temperature.
5 · Per-zone actuators
Small electric valves on the manifold — one per heating zone (typically one per room). Open and close based on the room thermostat. Lets each room run at its own temperature on its own schedule.
6 · WundaSmart wireless thermostats
Battery-powered wireless thermostats — one per room. Set the target temperature, schedule, holiday mode from your phone. Bedrooms cooler than living areas, weekends different from weekdays.
7 · Edge insulation strip
Strip of foam insulation around the perimeter of each room. Allows the heated floor to expand and contract slightly with temperature without cracking the floor finish above. Standard part of any wet UFH install.
8 · CleverBloom can help
We design the pipe layout for your floor plan, work out the manifold size and flow temperature, and coordinate with your floor-finish supplier. The system itself can be DIY-installed by a confident DIYer over a weekend.
Rapid Response has no consumable parts. Once installed, the pipe loops run for the life of the building. The manifold and pump have routine wear, like any heating system component.
Lifetime guarantee on the pipe
Wunda's heating pipe carries a lifetime guarantee against material defects. The oxygen barrier prevents oxygen ingress, which is the main cause of pipe deterioration in heating systems.
No annual service for the pipe
The pipe loops sit under the floor doing their job for decades. The only routine attention is at the manifold — usually included in the boiler or heat-pump annual service.
Treated water on the heating side
System water must include a rust inhibitor and pass through a magnetic filter, like any wet heating system. The inhibitor pays back through cleaner pipework and longer pump life.
Floor finish — standard care
Tiled floors over Rapid Response are cleaned and maintained exactly like any tiled floor. Engineered wood and LVT have manufacturer-specific maintenance — nothing different because of the heating underneath.
Zone repair if ever needed
If a pipe is ever damaged (very rare — usually only by drilling into the floor), the affected zone can be lifted and re-piped without disturbing the rest. Rare in practice; most installations run trouble-free for the life of the building.
UK manufacturer support
Wunda Group is based in Chepstow, Wales — UK design, UK manufacture, UK warranty. Their care team responds 6 days a week. CleverBloom handles design specification and project coordination.
Heat pump unit only. Radiators, UFH, and emitters are on the heating page.
